Using Nicotinic Acid to Lower
Cholesterol
© 2005 - Mangano Publishing Inc.
What is nicotinic acid and how is
it used to lower cholesterol? These are two important
questions in understanding how lower cholesterol can
be achieved either with or without medications, and
how mis-used natural supplements can be as dangerous
as drugs. In a nutshell, nicotinic acid is a form of
water soluble B vitamin. It does not require a prescription
even in the ultra high doses needed to impact cholesterol.
However, extreme caution needs to be used in any use
of nicotinic acid, especially if you have already been
prescribed a statin class of drugs such as Lipitor or
Crestor to lower cholesterol. Nicotinic acid can act
as a catalyst for some of the negative side effects
of statin drugs.
It is important that the use of nicotinic acid be monitored
by a health care professional. Some of the side effects
of such high doses can be a flushed feeling or hot flashes.
In addition, if you take medication to lower blood pressure,
again nicotinic acid magnifies the results and blood
pressure can drop to a dangerously low level. Careful
monitoring of both blood pressure and cholesterol are
important. Other side effects include nausea, indigestion,
gas and other gastrointestinal problems. More serious
side effects include liver problems and gout or an increase
in overall blood sugar.
Nicotinic acid is effective in lowering LDL cholesterol
even by as much as 10 or 20 percent. It can also raise
the good cholesterol, the High Density Lipoprotein by
15-35 percent. An added bonus is the reduction of triglycerides
by anywhere from 20 to 50 percent.
To avoid toxic or uncomfortable side effects, natural
forms of Vitamin B or niacin can be obtained through
a good diet. Also, HDL cholesterol levels can be increased
through exercise. A low cholesterol and low fat diet
and exercise plan that reduce cholesterol naturally
can be found in The 60-Day Prescription Free Cholesterol
Cure.
