Effectiveness of Statin Drugs to Lower Cholesterol Varies Widely

Statin drugs are one of the most common ways to lower cholesterol. These drugs are dispensed under a variety of brand names such as Lipitor, Crestor, and Zocor, but many times it is a matter of trial and error to find which drugs will work. This puts patients on a long process – one that can take months or even years – to find a statin drug that will be effective in lowering cholesterol in that individual.

A new discovery in genetics may shed some light on why some people respond quickly to statin drugs and others do not. The findings indicated that there are a couple of genetic variations that greatly impact the effectiveness of statin drugs on some people. The variations were most widely seen in participants in the study who were of African descent, but there was also a case of this variation in one Caucasian in the study.

Variations in genes can occur in the basic building blocks. When four of those blocks differ slightly from the other forms of the gene, then there is a variation worth studying. In the case of resistance or response to statin drugs used to lower cholesterol, the African-Americans and Caucasians were specifically targeted because of the greater variations in their genetic make up than between other races.

The study was conclusive in that it verified that genes are one part of the larger puzzle as to why some people respond quickly to statin drugs and others do not. There are however, other factors that are being examined before a complete picture comes into focus.
