What Happens When You Are Lowering Cholesterol With Lipitor?

© 2005 - Frank Mangano

Lower cholesterol is achievable with a drug called Lipitor, generically known as atorvastatin. It is one of the top cholesterol lowering drugs on the market, but it may not come without the risk of serious side effects.

Lipitor is a drug for lowering cholesterol that falls under the general drug category called statins. These types of drugs are effective in lowering cholesterol by actually blocking cholesterol’s production. It works at the enzyme level. Statins inhibit the production of enzymes that are used by the body to manufacture cholesterol.

Although lowering cholesterol is achievable with Lipitor, there are other much less desirable results. For example, the use of any statin can result in muscle soreness and cramps. This is a common side effect, yet a potentially serious one. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention because it could be a pre-cursor to more serious kidney problems.

Another potential danger with using Lipitor for lowering cholesterol is how it interacts with other drugs. Several antibiotics are known to cause serious health problems, even death if mixed with atorvastatin. Even high doses of niacin taken with atorvastatin can cause severe problems in the patient. It is extremely important for Lipitor users to inform their doctor of any other prescriptions taken with Lipitor, even birth control pills. In addition, herbal remedies combined with Lipitor can cause similar adverse reactions and should be divulged to your doctor.

If you are looking for a natural alternative to Lipitor and its corresponding side effects, there are other options. Knowing how to manage your diet is the first place to start. If that doesn’t work, simply because you have a strong family history of cholesterol problems, then certain herbs, vitamins and minerals can make a difference as you try for lowering cholesterol.
