MRIs Used to Monitor Cholesterol Drugs

Statin drugs used for lowering cholesterol have been proven effective, and the results are normally seen by testing the blood for cholesterol levels. However, the impact of these drugs in removing the build-up from artery walls was only assumed until Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) confirmed the results.

The scans of artery walls using MRI indicated that after six months on the statin drugs, not only were lowered cholesterol levels found in the blood, but the cholesterol plaque attached to the walls of the arteries was thinner. The use of MRI to determine this began at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

MRI has been used before to examine arteries for damage, but until recently no visible results could be seen in under a year. The method used by Johns Hopkins increased the intensity of the signal using rings around the chests of patients and inserting an antenna through the patient’s nose and down their esophagus. The increased signal showed marked differences in the way treatment of high cholesterol is affected by statin drug usage. It is the hope of study administrators that this kind of technology can be used to predict the likelihood of arterial diseases much earlier, so that dietary changes and lower, preventative doses of medications can be used to maintain lowered cholesterol levels.

Statin drugs, sold under such brands as Lipitor, Crestor, and Zocor, are effective at lowering cholesterol by 30-40 percent. However, uncomfortable side effects, especially muscle soreness and weakness, are often reported. Serious kidney conditions can also occur in some cases. Lowering cholesterol is possible without the side effects of drugs through a diet containing low cholesterol foods and specific minerals and vitamins. Exercise is also effective in controlling overall cholesterol. To learn more about lowering cholesterol naturally, you can read The 60 Day Prescription Free Cholesterol Cure.
