What To Do If You Have Been Diagnosed with Cardiac Disease

Knowing the risk factors of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and obesity, could save your life

Cardiac disease is an extremely serious condition that can be the result of heredity or develop over time because of high cholesterol, hypertension (high blood pressure) or obesity. All of these conditions lead to cardiac disease eventually. If you are lucky and smart enough to find out your risk early and take steps to manage the treatable aspects of the disease, then you won't become one of the 30% of cardiac disease suffers whose very first symptom is sudden death.

The fact that 70% of the population has some warning signs is good, but only if they take action to reduce their risk and prevent a heart attack or stroke. Here are some of the absolutely necessary changes you must make if you are going to protect yourself against heart disease:

  1. If you smoke, STOP!
  2. Lower LDL (bad) cholesterol to below 100 mg/dL and total cholesterol to below 200 mg/L.
  3. Start an exercise program that will help you raise your HDL (good) cholesterol to at least 40 mg/dL
  4. If your Body Mass Index (BMI) is above 25, then you need to lose weight through a healthy diet and exercise
  5. Lower blood pressure to at least 120/80

Anyone with measurements higher than those listed above, or who smokes, has a sedentary lifestyle, or family history of heart disease is considered high risk. Much of the remedy for these conditions is within your control by changing your diet and lifestyle. Many doctors will prescribe statin drugs to lower cholesterol or a cocktail of drugs to lower blood pressure, but most often this can be achieved through natural methods that don't involve prescription drugs. A low-fat, low cholesterol diet and exercise will control obesity, blood pressure and cholesterol alike. In addition, supplementing the diet with specific vitamins, minerals and herbs can lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

Make the decision to reduce your risk of cardiac disease in a natural and healthy way.
