Three-Drug Combo Raises HDL, Reduces Cholesterol

A non-statin drug therapy has been tested to see if it can effectively raise High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) which is the good kind of cholesterol in order to reduce cholesterol overall. The drug combination includes gemifibrozil, niacin, and cholestyramine, and is meant to be used as part of cholesterol-healthy lifestyle of diet, exercise, and drug therapy.

Labeled the Armed Forces Regression Study, the experiment consisted for 143 retired military personnel. The subjects all had low levels of HDL cholesterol and some form of existing coronary artery disease. Along with receiving the drug, all were educated and monitored in a heart-healthy diet and lifestyle. Lifestyle changes included quitting smoking. At the beginning, 80 percent were smokers and that number was reduced to just 10 percent by the end of the study.

The drug therapy seemed to be effective in both raising HDL and in reducing cholesterol overall. HDL was raised by 36 percent, while LDL, the bad cholesterol, went down by 26% overall. Even triglycerides were lowered by 50 percent as a result of the drugs and lifestyle changes that took place over 30 months. These results will have drug manufacturers scrambling to come up with the best tri-drug, HDL-raising formula for their brand.

Each of the drugs used in the formula have some sort of side effect, but are considered well tolerated by enough people that they are being investigated further as a viable method of raising HDL. In order to reduce cholesterol, both HDL needs to be high enough (above 40 mg/dL) and LDL needs to be low enough (below 100 mg/dL).

You can reduce cholesterol naturally, without the risk of side effects from prescription drugs. Generally, within a couple of months, significant results will occur.
