Low-Fat Vs Low-Carb for Cholesterol Management

Losing weight may be one effective method of cholesterol management. There have been trends and fads, some based on science and others based on media hype and food crazes, but the basic formula for losing weight remains the same: burn more than you consume. Controlling calories and exercising may work but where those calories come from has more to do with cholesterol management than just weight loss.

An evaluation of five clinical trials was compared by Alain J. Nordmann, M.D., M.Sc. from the University Hospital in Basel, Switzerland. The studies monitored 447 people between the ages of 42 and 49. Half of the group was placed on a low carbohydrate diet and the other half on a low-fat diet.

In general, dieters are more successful at losing weight quickly on low-carb diets than the less satisfying low fat diets. However, in the studies evaluated here, after one year both groups lost weight and maintained weight loss just as long on both types of diets. Blood pressure was also lowered at an equal rate, just from the weight loss. What was different was how cholesterol was managed. The group on the low carbohydrate diet had raised their LDL (bad) cholesterol. At the same time there was an increase in HDL (good) cholesterol and reduction in triglycerides.

It is still too early to determine if the positive effects of a low carb diet outweigh the negative, especially in long term cholesterol management and cardiac health. What doctors generally agree upon is that reducing weight is important in maintaining good cardiac health. Moderation in fat and carbohydrate intake can result in weight loss without the risk of long term heart problems because it reduces the risk of hypertension and diabetes.
